Class Description:

This 16-hour course is a fast paced introductory overview of vehicle forensics, designed to provide law enforcement personnel with a basic understanding and acquisition knowledge of vehicle networks and computing systems, specifically the telematics and infotainment systems and the valuable data they contain. Students will participate in hands-on exercises to better learn these techniques. The course includes: Background on vehicle computer systems, how they have evolved, and how they relate to crime; provide an overview on vehicle networks and the CANbus system; provide an overview on vehicle infotainment and telematics systems; provide hands-on instruction on the acquisitions of infotainment systems; provide hands-on instruction on the post acquisitions analysis and reporting; and instruction on legal issues and search warrants related to vehicle investigations.

Prerequisites

Students must have a working knowledge of computer operating systems, circuit boards, and vehicle components. Students should also be able to feel comfortable with tight spaces and moving about a vehicle to disassemble hard to reach vehicle systems. Students should wear comfortable clothing to facilitate working in and about a vehicle.

Who Should Attend:

Students should be law enforcement personnel assigned to a cyber; white collar crime; auto theft investigative; fraud or forgery; or identity theft units, as well as individuals whose primary responsibility is to seize computer evidence/equipment discovered at crime scenes.

Class Objectives:

Students will have a basic knowledge of vehicle networks and computing systems, specifically the telematics and infotainment systems. They will leave with a better understanding and stronger confidence on how to properly extract data from the vehicle infotainment system modules. Futhermore, will be able to identify supported vehicles; data extraction and investigative techniques, from vehicles involved in a crime by accessing the infotainment or telematics system.
